The federal government is also involved in breeding and releasing a parasitic wasp, which cannot cope with large infestations, but can help keep numbers of caterpillars lower than they would otherwise be.
A species specific virus, tradenamed "Gypchek,” has been developed by U.S. Forest Service scientists. Although it is still under study and is not available, for widespread use, it apparently blocks the moths' reproductive system, leaving the females unable to produce the eggs from which the next season’s caterpillars hatch. The scientists experimenting with the virus predict that a commercially available product is at least two years away.
Whatever the outcome of Rappahannock’s battle with the gypsy moth, Mary Dobrovir and the citizens of Rappahannock will know a lot more about the pest because of the federal study.
