To the editor:
A county, like any group of people, without youth will not prosper and grow. The youth are the future.
Rappahannock County has spent many years trying to shelter it’s youth from the outside world, but that time is over. In a decade where education is extremely important many youth leave to obtain a higher education.
Those leaving see the outside world without any preparation and it shocks them. When leaving Rappahannock most youth know only what they have seen on the 11:00 news and read in the Rappahannock News. The world we live in is not as “nice” as our county leaders would like to present it to us.
Speaking as a former youth that did leave Rappahannock for a highter education, my teachers did not prepare me for what I found. Classes were harder than for what my college preperatory courses supposedly prepared me. The world is a lot harder and colder than what I imagined.
My first experience at school was of my roomate being mugged and a week later I saw a man knifed. Along with these shocking experiences there were also good things like being able to go to movies or get a pizza without driving 45 minutes. The world is full of good and bad.
