ne DarK oi tne old apple tree was a demonstration project on the life cycle of the gypsy moth. Egg masses were tucked into its crevices. Pupae, from which both male and female moths had hatched, hung from it, and there were even some caterpillars attached, shrunken, dead now, the victims of a naturally occurring virus named NPV which produces “wilt disease”.
After she collected another 4.5 centimeters worth of dead male moths, she headed back towards the truck. A very alive male moth found her and flew around her head, apparently attracted by the pheromone she had picked up while handling the traps.
“The guys in the store (the F T Valley Grocery) tease me about spreading gypsy moths,” she laughed. She said she had tried to explain that she couldn’t spread the gypsy moth problem by having male moths follow her into the store, only by leading them to female moths, but those moths would be where the caterpillars had already been.
The fifth and final stop of the morning was on Route 621 between Route 231 and Woodville, in the woods near an orchard. At that site a moth flew out as she opened the trap. “An escapee,” she said. She collected another five centimeters wrorth of clumped-up male moths, and headed home, planning to check another seven sites in the afternoon
