Once the male moths quit flying, which Mrs. Dobrovir thinks will be in a very few weeks, the next step will be counting a sampling of egg masses. She will have to take further training for that and may have help. She hopes to be finished with that before hunting season begins, since she doesn’t want to be wandering around in the woods during the hunting season.
Then once the data from these studies is fed into computers at Virginia Tech, the federal government will decide what to do about the problem.
Mrs. Dobrovir believes that the data will show the gypsy moth problem to be severe enough to warrant the federal government providing free spraying for all of the county in the project area. In fact, she said the policy now is that the land will be sprayed, unless the landowner specifically requests that it not be.
In the rest of the county, she said spraying may be available on a costshare basis. Land in the Shenandoah National Park will not be sprayed except in those areas that attract the most tourists. The Park land can serve as a control for the study, she explained.
Two sprays are being recommended for gypsy moth caterpillars, Mrs. Dobrovir said. Dimilin inhibits their growth by interfering with the production of chitin, the main component of the caterpillar’s exoskeleton. As the caterpillar grows, it moults, and must grow a new exoskeleton each time. Dimilin is quite effective, but is not recommended for spraying over ponds or streams, because it may affect other insects fish feed on.
