FRONT ROYAL — Avtex Fibers Front Roya} Inc. and FMC Corp. notified the Environmental Protection Agency last Thursday, July 20, of their plans to comply with an EPA order to clean up groundwater contamination caused by the rayon manufacturing plant in Front Royal.
Included in the cleanup process are plans to cleanse retired waste basins that may still be contaminating the ground water along the banks of the Shenandoah River.
The EPA received a written notice of compliance from Avtex and FMC Corp. The hand-delivered letter was a response to a unilateral EPA order issued to the two companies on June 30 compelling them to submit a cleanup plan for EPA approval within 20 days of the order.
“We didn’t know what to expect, or what their response would be,” said Peter Ludzia, the EPA enforcement manager, “but we were pleased that the companies came in under the time frame provided by the EPA.”
The order was issued after Avtex and FMC Corp. failed to negotiate a voluntary cleanup agreement, according to Luzia.
