will be constructed of patterned brick, Council member Brad Fisher told the ARB. The work will be done in stages by the Virginia Department of Transportation, with the first work done on the sections in the worst repair -specifically along Main St. from the Trinity Church parking lot to Jett St.
The idea with the brick corners, Mrs. Willis explained, is to try and tie the rest of the sidewalks into the brick walk which now runs in front of the courthouse complex on Gay .St.
• Charles Smoot, for a roof for an existing front porch on his home off North Main St. It will be of A-frame construction with asphalt shingles to match the rest of the house.
• Grace Sims, for a trellis in front of the garage at her home on Blue Ridge Ave. Landscape architect Rosa Crocker said that no decision has been reached on whether to leave the wood unpainted or to paint it yellow to match the body of the garage or green to match the trim. The ARB approved all three options, since the colors had previously been approved for the house;
Ms. Crocker told the board that Trinity Church had settled on a clematis vine for the screening on its board fencing around the air conditioning condensers. She also told the ARB the church is considering some possibilities, including veneer or shuttered doors, to screen the new doors at the back of the church facing Middle St. Gallery. The idea, she explained, is to give the effect of aged doors.
Mr. Parrish said he liked the idea, “but you’ll have to be more specific. We have to see drawings.”
• Bruce Wetteroth, for a sign at his Earth Gallery at the comer of Porter and Gay Streets. The post will be four inch square treated lumber, and the oval sign will have a pale yellow background and dark green lettering and trim.
• Laurie Marshall and Rex Slack, to paint their home on Blue Ridge Ave. The body of the house will be fleece white, the trim pure white, and the shutters mallard green.
Mrs. Willis said that complaints had been received about t\yo unapproved signs hanging in town in front of the Thrift Shop and Washington Video Rentals. Mrs. Willis and Mr. Parrish voted to request John McCarthy to send letters to both businesses informing them of the requirements of the Historic District Ordinance.
“I feel certain that it is simply that the did not know'” about the ordinance, she said.
