It is possible, some say. that the fungus is one which was released 79 years ago in a futile attempt to control the moths.
In 1910 and 1911, according to an AP report, a fungus from Japan which kills caterpillars was released near Boston. It reportedly had little effect, but records indicate the experiment was conducted under adverse weather conditions.
The fungus was tried again in 1985 and 1986 in the Allegany State Park in New York and in Shenandoah National Park, but again the experimental results were unclear, In 1985 the caterpillars were also attacked by a virus, and in 1986 a severe drought inhibited the fungus's ability to spread.
The drought experience. Dr. McManus pointed out, is one of the weaknesses of the use of a fungus as a biological control. Even if it does attack and kill gypsy moths, it is dependent on sufficient moisture to survive and spread.
Experiments with the fungus have also been very limited and tightly controlled by federal regulations.
