Besides the birthday celebration, the event is also planned as a fundraiser for the town’s volunteer fire department, whose Independence Day fundraising was seriously hurt by the torrential rains which washed out the evening’s entertainment.
In a cooperative effort, the fire department, the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community, the town’s business council and the Town Council have decided to restage the evening’s entertainment as a birthday salute to the town.
The event will be cehtered at the courthouse complex on Gay St. in Washington beginning at 5 p.m. There will be volleyball for the adults and others, and games for younger children and other activities for those not up to strenuous athletic endeavors).
At 6 p.m. musical entertainment will begin with the bluegrass band New Liberty. The group was scheduled to perform on July 4th, but was rained out.
At 8 p.m., more music will begin courtesy of the Cross Country band.
In addition to the sports, games and music there will be food and drink aplenty. The department plans to have hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, roasted corn on the cob, beer, wine and soft drinks.
“Bring your family and friends to help us celebrate our town’s 240th birthday,” said Chief Roger Roach.
