RAAC invited two Chinese observers to speak Aug. 24, both of whom found themselves caught up in the storm centered on Beijing’s Tieneman Square this past May, where Chinese students camped for days in a historic and ultimately unsuccessful bid for greater freedom.
Tracy Mannon told the Gay Street audience of the warmth and friendliness of the students she came to know as their professor at Beijing University.
'To them, wye are always the symbol of hope and freedom,' she explained. ‘On the one hand, they think this is a place where bullets fly in the streets; on the other, they think it’s a land of unbelievable opportunity, where any man can become a millionaire.'
