This is a good way to serve fruit to a large number of people, especially at a cookout. The size of the watermelon and the amount of fruit depends on the head count of guests.

1/2 watermelon

1 small honeydew melon

1 cantaloupe or other melon

1 pound nectarines

1 pound peaches

Sugar

lemon juice

1 pint sweet white wine or 1 cup sherry (optional)

1 pint blueberries

1/4 teaspoon powdered vitamin C

Scoop out all the red part of the watermelon with a melon ball cutter. Discard the seeds and put the balls in a large bowl. If possible, chill the watermelon shells.

Halve and seed the other melons and cut them into balls with the same cutter and add them to the watermelon balls. Slice the nectarines without peeling. Peel and slice the peaches. Sprinkle all the fruit with sugar to taste but do not oversweeten. Sprinkle with lemon juice to taste. Add the wine or sherry if desired. Mix gently. Cover and chill in the refrigerator.

Just before serving fill the melon shell with the mixed fruits and sprinkle all over with vitamin C and with blueberries. The Saturday Evening Post-All American Cookbook.
