The Fourth Annual Fantastic International Buffet went off without a hitch last week, making a crowd of hungry folks up in Harmony Hollow very happy.
The buffet, prepared and served by the Rappahannock friends of Camp Fantastic, is the culinary highlight of the week at a very special camp held every August at the Northern Virginia 4-H Education Center.
The camp is for children with cancer. The 85 children who attended this year’s session do have unusual medical problems. But they also have healthy appetites, just like any other kids whose days are jammed packed with activities like swimming, archery, horseback riding, nature walks, and softball, not to mention climbing up and down the hills of Harmony Hollow.
So they’re delighted when Tuesday night brings the feast prepared by some of Rappahannock’s finest cooks and grill masters. And so are the adult volunteers, the 4-H members who are the junior leaders at Camp Fantastic, and the staff of doctors and nurses from the National Institute of Health who donate their time and services, taking their summer vacation at the 4-H Center.
The dinner is a community effort, involving scores of people.
Fantastic’s friends from Rappahannock earned a big “How! How!” — the campers’ version of applause — on Tuesday night.
And the kids awarded another, even louder “How! How!” to Julie
