Elementary school principal Bernard Chesshir said children entering buses should walk ahead of the safety gate or, for buses without the gate, walk far enough ahead of the bus so the children can see the driver’s eyes and the driver the child’s. “It’s a good 10 feet,’’ he said.
Mr. Chesshir advised parents to instruct children to stand in a straight line with no horseplay while waiting for the bus. “Stay off the road, and don’t move forward until the bus stops, and the driver signals the children on board," he said, suggesting parents stay with the children until they board or have an older responsible child supervise behavior at the stop.
He said children should follow all safety regulations on the bus which are printed in the school handbook, available at the schools.
