Energy experts describe most insulated attics, for instance, as "Swiss cheese.” People add more insulation and thicken the cheese, but holes usually remain. Where? Around light fixtures, chimneys, furnace stacks and spaces where pipes or wires come in.
Another common error is looking only at doors and windows to reduce home air leakage. They account for only 17% of leaks. Other places to look are: Electric outlets, 20%; the gap where walls join the foundation, 25%; and areas around ductwork, 15%.
A good insulation tester is a piece of tissue paper suspended frm a wire coat hanger. Walk around your home with this tester and check for all the OTHER drafts. Caulk and insulate them. Then, you’ll be closer to being “Insultated to the hilt.”
