Sheriff Woodward, an experienced school bus driver himself, said the most dangerous place for loading and unloading children is U.S. 211, because of the faster moving traffic, but he added that no road is safe. “The back roads can be so narrow that a bus can take up the whole road," he said, adding that a car going too fast may have difficulty stopping.
The sheriff offered the suggestion to parents that small children wear bright colors, which are more noticeable in early morning light by passing motorists.
Mr. Huff said most buses stop at driveways, and children should stand in the drive in view of the bus.
