“Mr. Wilder appears to have broken the law,” stated Donald W. Huffman, chairan of the Republican Party of Virginia, “and he must be prosecuted and, if convicted, punished.”
Huffman accused Wilder of intentionally violating the disclosure law in order to hide his involvement in a murder trial from receiving publicity.
Wilder, too, called upon the attorney general to investigate his actions in order to “clear the air.”
“As you know, my opponent and his party have been making political charges against me for several weeks,” wrote Wilder in a letter written to Terry last Friday, Aug. 25. “I know that these charges are politically motivated and are unfounded.”
Terry determined that the Conflict of Interest Act “contained no express requirement that trust interests be reported,” and that Wilder had not been unlawful. Wilder also filed an addendum to his report to include the Louisa County property.
