Renee Leake, Rappahannock’s girls varsity basketball coach, envisions great things in the upcoming 1989 campaign for the Lady Panthers. “They’re a good team, and if they play like they’re capable of playing, we’ll have a winning season,” she said.
But on Tuesday night, Aug. 29, the Lady Panthers didn’t look like the team Coach Leake has been working with in practice, and before a sparse home crowd, they fell to the Warren County Wildcats, 38-32.
“They weren’t running any of the plays we designed,” said Leake. Instead the Panther guards consistently tried to lob the ball under the basket, where it was picked off, RCHS committed 55 turnovers in the game, 20 coming in the opening period.
Junior • Stephanie Jones scored Rappahannock’s only bucket of the first quarter en route to a 9-2 deficit. The Panthers offense fared little better in the second quarter as they trailed 14-6 at the intermission.
But Coach Leake refused to let her girls quit at halftime, telling them the “real Panther team” could win this game.
Sparked by the coach’s words, Rappahannock outscored the Wildcats 12-6, cutting the margin to 2418 at the end of the third period. Tasha Roy tied the contest at 30 with two minutes remaining when she capitalized on a Wildcat turnover.
