Meanwhile, the strike gathered force. Trucks arrived with workers, with businessmen, with doctors and nurses, all showing their support for the students. Outside the city, troops from far away appeared, held in check for a while as the citizens formed human roadblocks, using the time to explain events to soldiers from far away.

‘It was amazing, how they communicated with each other,' she said. ‘Somehow, without telephones and very few cars, everyone knew what was going on.‘

At the last, she said, the students knew that their strike would end in violence and death. They came back to the campus in despair. The troops had received orders to advance through the outskirts of town.
