The breakfast program is not available in all of Virginia’s public schools, but the lunch program is in nearly all of them. The goal of the school lunch program is to provide one-third of the children’s nutrition, over a period of time, said Jane Logan, associate director of School Food Service in the Virginia Department of Education.
The four components of the lunch program are a two-ounce serving of meat or a meat alternate; two servings of either vegetables or fruits that total three-fourths of a cup; bread or a bread alternate for a total of eight servings per week; and a half pint or eight ounces of milk, Ms. Logan said.
