Performing arts workshops
The Golden Key will sponsor two workshops in the performing arts for children. The first will be geared toward teenagers, and will focus on practice for dance, drama and storytelling. Another will emphasize creative movement and storytelling for children ages 7-12, and use singing, movement and theatre games to learn the art of performance. Both will be taught by Catherine Kiley at the Town Hall in Washington. The cost for eight sessions, each Monday through Nov. 13, is $50. For more information call Ms. Kiley (987-3106).
Fire prevention day
In cor\junction with Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue Association is sponsoring a Fire Prevention Day at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 1-4 p.m. There will be displays of fire equipment and apparatus, demonstrations of equipment, and the Pegasus med-evac helicopter from the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville will be on display as well (assuming that it is not needed for an emergency call). Free blood pressure checks will be available, along with brochures and other information about fire safety. There will be trained fire personnel available to answer questions, and free balloons and hats for all children. There will also be hot dogs, drinks and baked goods available. The public is invited to attend and learn more about this important topic.
Story workshop Oct. 14,15
Julie Portman, artistic director of the Golden Key Performance Group, will lead a weekend workshop in storytelling for adults who want to tell and listen and create with stories. The workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14 and 15 at the Town Hall in Washington. It will focus on story as a language common to everyone and as a key to creativity. In the workshop, visual art, poetry, traditional and personal stories will be used as a source of inspiration. Participants will also work in small groups creating and sharing stories together. The cost of the weekend workshop is $50. Advance registration is $45. Call the Golden Key at 987-3164 for information.
PTA booth at Sperryville
The Rappahannock County Elementary School PTA will be sponsoring a carmel apple booth during the Sperryville Apple Harvest weekend. The festival will be held Oct. 7 and 8 and the PTA booth will be in front of Carriage House Antiques in the Village of Sperryville. “Your support will be greatly appreciated,” said PTA organizer, Maggie Rogers.
Child development course
Lord Fairfax Community College is sponsoring an Introduction to Child Development Course, a 3-hour college credit course at The Child Care and Learning Center beginning Thursday, Oct. 5. Skyline Show celebrates Drive
The current exhibition at Middle Street Gallery in Washington, Va. is the Skyline Show, presented in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Skyline Drive. Thirty-five works of art were selected, from entries juried by Professor Berthold Schmutzhart, Chairman of the Department of Sculpture, of the Corcoran Museum’s School of Art in Washington, D.C. Oils, watercolors, handmade paper relief, photography, cynatype, drawing and sculptures can be seen. Works selected were by gallery member artists as well as by artists from Bethesda, Md., Fairfax, Falls Church, Leesburg, Winchester, Casanova, Culpeper, Remington, Rixeyville, Orange and Front. Royal. The show will hang through Sunday, Oct. 22. On Oct. 22 Darwin Lambert will return to the gallery from 3-6 p.m. to speak with residents and sign his book, “The Undying Past of Shenandoah’s National Park.
