organization, and Wilder appeared disorganized through much of the summer, his lead isn’t larger. It is far better at this stage to be ahead than behind, but it would be considerably better for a Republican to be even farther ahead in view of what has transpired.
The bad news for Wilder is that while he came from much further behind than a mere six points four years ago, the circumstances then were radically different.
In 1985, Wilder narrowly defeated Chichester though the Republican’s campaign was hurt by inner dissension, and the GOP candidates for governor and attorneygeneral got clobbered by their Democratic opponents.
Not only that, but on election day heavy rains and flooding in one of the most Republican areas of the hurt kept down the turnout and may have cost Chichester the election.
This year Wilder is at the top of the ticket and has no coattails other than his own to ride on. The incumbent governor, Gerald Baliles, is no match for his predecessor, Charles S. Robb, in transferring political popularity.
For Coleman, however, at least one part of the Mason-Dixon poll could have ominous portents.
