Mason-Dixon poll is probaJy the most reliable conducted to ^tuge public opinion about Virginia Hblitics. In 1985 it was the first to reBact Wilder rapidly closing what had ramed an insurmountable lead by Republican John Chichester in the election for lieutenant-governor. _ The good news for Coleman is tl»at he is ahead in late September, evidence that there isn’t much lingering bitterness despite the hardfought three-way Republican gubernatorial primary that many regarded as a crap shoot.
It tends to show that Republicans have rallied around their nomiIjpe and that Coleman is also getting ia substantial number of independents in his camp.
The poll should heighten his ability to raise funds and to continue his television blasts against his opponent. It boosts the confidence of his supporters and campaign brain trust •And, with just six weeks to election day, pumps up the adrenalin in the candidate himself.
