Scott Updike, 10, of Washington, was a big winner at the Virginia State Fair this year, returning with ribbons in three categories of competition.
The fifth-grader brought home a blue ribbon and the auction proceeds from his 1,261 pound Grand Champion market heifer. He also took the Reserve Champion trophy in the Slaughter Steer competition. He won a blue ribbon in the Swine Pair competition, as well as the First Herdsman in the swine class. Scotty’s market lamb and “pen of three” also took first place honors.
Two other county 4-H members also brought home honors from the State Fair. Gregory Williams took seventh place in the Market Lamb competition, and Mary Beth Williams finished eighth in the Market Lamb judging.
