Craun said later. “I went to school with these boys, I trained with these boys and they are not just friends — they are family.”

Among the volunteers responding to the all-out call for help was Mark Miller’s father Alvin Miller.

He heard the call over the scanner and went to the firehouse. He saw his son’s car parked there. ‘They told me the train had hit the fire trutk and it just went through me,” the elder Miller said. “I was afraid of the worst. ”

He arrived at the scene and asked if Mark was driving. “They would not let me close to the train. I realized I could not do anything and went on home.”

When Chuck Thompson arrived — probably just before Zopp began his vigil — he wanted to put on gear and rescue people, but instead he took command and began putting a plan in operation. “It was the hardest decision I ever made in my life,” Thompson said.
