turned to Virginia Tech to get her Masters degree in Adult Continuing Education.
She assumes the post held previously by Sandra Richardson, who transferred to the Virginia Beach Extension office.
Mrs. Smith will take over the coordination of the Home Extension programs, which includes the Extension Homemaker Clubs, Culinary Heart program, and other programs based on local needs.
“Our educational programs are based on the needs within each county. We try to meet the needs of local families, especially those with two parents working outside the home.”
Along with the traditional homemaker-oriented Extension programs, Mrs. Smith noted that services offered can include financial planning, nutrition and diet workshops, and assistance with child care.
She added that specialists at Virginia Tech are also developing a home-based business project to assist entrepreneurs. “If there is interest and a need, that could be a possibility.”
Mrs. Smith said that the Extension Service is also attempting to expand small farmers’ participation in the state’s network of Farmers’ Markets, which provide a central location for farm goods sales.
As in the past, Mrs. Smith will share the oversight of the county’s 4H programs with Agricultural Extension Agent Tommy Williams. She said one of her first priorties is to organize the clubs for the coming year’s activities. And, she added, adult volunteers are needed to assist with the 4-H programs.
“I’m very impressed with the 4H programs which I have seen so far,” she said. She called the programs “a valuable youth organization, which teaches kids a lot not only about the subjects they study, but also develops leadership skills, self-confidence and public speaking skills.
“I’m really looking forward to working here,” Mrs. Smith said. “All the folks I’ve met have been really pleasant, and I’m looking forward to working with all of them.”
