The occasional letters to the editor by W. Michael Mahoney bring to your editorial page a welcome breath of reason, logic, and intelligence.
Regarding abortion, I find it curious that many who argue from the moral position that abortion is the killing of an innocent human being, nevertheless would permit the procedure in the case of rape, incest, or the endangerment of the mother’s life.
Maybe I’m missing something, but it seems to me that a fetus conceived in rape or incest is just as innocent as one conceived in any other circumstance. An abortion in these cases is surely no different in purpose from any other abortion; that is, it eleminates a fetus the mother does not want to bear, or eliminates the risk involved in childbirth.
The ambivalance of this position leads me to suspect that the right-tolife movement is based to a large extend on the desire, not to protect the unborn, but to Dunish the nrofileate.
