basic to its continued economic growth. Criticism by the other party on this point overlooks the fact that a majority of Republicans in the General Assembly voted for the transportation program and the tax increases that funded it.
Finally, these facts bear on how employment has been “hurt” under Robb and Baliles:
• In the past three years of Gov. Baliles’ term 300,000 jobs have been created in Virginia.
• More jobs were created in ^he first year of Baliles’ term than ill all four years of Republican Gov. John Dalton’s term.
• Today, Virginia is creating more new jobs per capita than any other state in the nation.
• Umemployment is down to 3.3 percent in Virginia as of April 1989 — one of the lowest rates in the nation. By contrast, umemployment rose during the Dalton administration.
These facts are merely a selection from a much larger number, all pointing to the same conclusion; namely, that Virginia’s budget, its tax structure, and its economic programs have been extraordinarily well managed for the past eight years under the leadership of Governors Robb and Baliles.
Lt. Gov. Doug Wilder is a member of Gov. Baliles’ team, and has been endorsed by him and Sen. Robb as candidate for Governor. Before 1985, Lt. Gov. Wilder served a number of terms in the Virginia Senate where he was one of its most effective members. In short, he has the necessary experience to continue the Democrats highly successful administration of government in Virginia.
A vote for Mr. Wilder and his running mates, Don Beyer and Mary Sue Terry, in November is clearly in the best interest of Virginia and all Virginians.
