The betting here is that the next Mason-Dixon poll, released around mid-October, will give an even better indication of where the race is heading.

If Coleman still has a six-point or better lead at that time, it could be a clear sign the momentum is with him, and he is heading to a November win.

But if his lead is three points or less, or Wilder takes the lead, it will demonstrate a serious, erosion of strength, or that the undecided voters are drifting to Wilder.

In that event, the gubernatorial race will likely become a cliffhanger that hearkens back to the GodwinHowell race of 1973 when up until the eleventh hour it appeared Howell had won. In that instance, Howell had closed fast in the polls and nearly came out ahead on the only day when the poll that counts was taken.
