“Some people are up in their assessments,” she said. “We didn’t know they had all these extras on their cars. Some people, who have been giving us all the information, didn’t have an increase.” She said she had been trying to explain all of this to taxpayers who have called in to complain, “but a lot of people don’t listen. They don’t want to hear what you’re saying,” she added.
The supervisors were informed that the county had received a Community Development Block Grant of up to $16,848 to conduct a study of substandard housing in the county. Mr. McCarthy said the next step would be to advertise for a consulting firm to conduct the study.
Jackson District'Supervisor Ellis •Bingham asked, “Once we identify these facilities, do we go to PD 9 and have them start the block grant request?”
Mr. McCarthy said that would be the procedure, but “that is a program that HUD has frozen for the moment.”
“If you own your house and it’s in bad shape, you can get up to $25,000 to fix it up,” Col. Bingham said. “But a lot of landowners own rental properties, and they have never put anything into them. These properties should be on the bottom of the list,” he suggested.
Mr. McCarthy disagreed. “If the renter was allowed to stay in the house with only a slight increase in the rent, the landowner would be eligible,” he said. “But if the tenant was thrown out, the money would have to be repaid.
