investment for the future of the private enterprise system and for the future of our democratic way of life. They know that the private-public partnership supporting 4-H is one of the most cost-effective in the nation — and moreover, it works!
The success of 4-H as a dynamic program strongly influencing the future of our nation depends on this delicate partnership — the meshing of human and financial resources from the major corporations of America with the spirit and energies of a half million volunteers and 4.5 million 4-H members together with the professional guidance and knowledge base of the land-grant university system and U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The private sector today donates approximately $40 million annuallly to support 4-H at the national, state and local levels. Through National 4H Council, some 1,800 corporations, foundations and organizations contribute funds that provide essential elements of motivation, incentives and training for both youth and volunteers. Numerous corporations sponsor scholarships to further 4-H members’ studies at the college level.
The volunteer corps in 4-H — some 600,000 strong — is its real backbone and basic to the cost-effective delivery of practical educational experiences. For every hour spent by a professional Extension worker in 4-H, volunteers donate 10 hours of time.
