I agree with Mr. Mahoney that the answers will not be simple. However, I have a suggestion for the interim, and while it is less than satisfactory, it might provide some relief for our politicians who are sb comically tap dancing around the issue: why not provide a box on every income tax form, wherein each citizen could indicate his position on abortion?
Those who oppose abortion could then be assessed an additional threie or four thousand dollars, to be used for the delivery and care of unwanted babies. They would also, by checking this box, volunteer to adopt a child whose care could not be bought with the assessed funds.
This same information could also be used as a referendum on the question, and our politicians would be spared the agony of having actuary to risk taking—or holding to—an unpopular position, based on conscience. 1
