Ki Theatre, a touring company formerly known as Golden Key, will give two performances of “Conference of the Birds,” Part I, Feb. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. in Washington, Virginia’s Town Hall.
A major work-in-progress, “Conference of the Birds” is an allegorical masterpiece made possible with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, Pennsylvania Council for the Arts, and Meet the Composer.
“The work originates from a 12th century Persian poem,” says Ki’s artistic director Julie Portman. “It traces the epic journey of a ‘nation’ of birds in search of a new leader.
“Broadly cross-cultural and particularly relevant to the dramatic events in eastern Europe today, the sybolism embodies the passion, fear and hope of any human being seeking freedom,” adds Ms. Portman, herself a Ki performer and Obie award winner.
