mound of effluent which is not being absorbed into the ground. Among other problems, mounding can decrease the separation distance between the unfiltered effluent and the underground aquifer, “increasing the potential to contaminate the groundwater.”

Other problems, Mr. Shepherd said, have resulted from drainfields which were sited near old abandoned wells. Since they are usually a direct connection to the acquifer, he said, there is a “tremendous increase” in the danger of contamination if the septic discharge gets into such a well.

“The nitrate and mounding studies can pretty well tell” whether the soils are suitable, he said. “We are talking about a tremendous amount of sewerage, and the more there is, the more possibility of contamination.”

During The Inn’s presentation to the Planning Commission on Jan. 26, architect Daniel Lee described a new technology which allows cars to be parked on grass. In addition to being less visually disturbing than hard-top or gravel, Mr. Lee said, it would also allow a drainfield to be put beneath it.

Not so, according to Mr. Shepherd. State regulations require any parking lot atop a drainfield be either concrete or asphalt, he said. The regulations also stipulate an additional separation distance between the surface and the drain lines, to prevent them from being crushed by the weight of traffic on the lot.
