“It really doesn’t take that much time to write down the person’s name and where they live,” Mabel Burke said of video rentals. Like Viewtown, the Woodville store has no membership charge, just rental fees.
“We get people from Boston, Sperry ville, Castleton and even some from Little Washington,” she said, adding that being familiar with the customer’s face helps in assuring the tapes’ return after the rental.
With the loss of gasoline revenues, some stores may consider video rentals as a compensation.
“We’ll probally get tapes,” Doris Dennis, owner and proprietor of Castleton Store, said, explaining that country stores don’t make a great deal from gasoline revenues but the pumps act as a “drawing card.”
