Mr. McCarthy also told the supervisors that the county’s extension agents have qualified for a $10,000 grant to do a study of the county’s groundwater. The grant will be shared with Page County. Well water will be tested for pesticides, fecal coliforms and nutrients. The supervisors approved spending $1,000 to prepare the maps that will result from the studies.
The supervisors also voted to spend $1,557 for the county’s share for computer equipment for the district Health Department office, and also voted to approve $3,500 to hire a temporary part-time secretary to help out in the building office. Mr. McCarthy told the supervisors that fees collected from building applications would cover the salary cost. He also said he expects the position to become permanent next year.
In other action, the Board of Supervisors:
• met with Sandy Reeves, Shenandoah National Park’s new management assistant. Mr. Reeves said his job is to work with the communities that are adjacent to the park. He also introduced William Wade, the park’s superintendent.
• reappointed Frank Reynolds to the Middle Virginia Community Corrections Resources Board.
• appointed Helen Platt to fill out Byrd Jones’s term on the Library Board.
