The state also requires an alternate “repair field” of at least 50 percent the size of the primary field, which must also be designed, sited and approved when the primary field is approved. “Special considerations might increase the required size of the repair field to 100 percent” of the size of the primary field, Mr. Shepherd added.
In addition to the design process, he said, for a drainfield of that size, the state would also require a soil analysis of the site, and studies of nitrate loading and “mounding.” He explained that the nitrate study is designed to determine whether the soils can assimilate the projected amount of waste, including salts like sodium and calcium, without harm.
