Wilma Burke, co-owner and manager of F.T. Valley Grocery on Rt. 231 just south of Sperryville, explained that her country store stopped its rental business due to lack of payment and lack of return by tape renters.
“Some of the tapes we rented on consignment,” she said of her experience, “but, some of them we had to buy. Little stores just can’t afford to keep buying these tapes and then have people not return them.”
Though the business proved to be “fairly successful” in its infancy as it developed it grew far more demanding and space consuming than the Burkes’ imagined.
