quirements, the sanitarian estimated that the drainfield would need about 10,000 square feet of drainfield lines. That works out to 5,100 linear feet — nearly a mile —of line.
He noted that the 10,000 square foot figure is not the size of the area on which the drainfield would be located, but the actual square footage required in the drainage trenches themselves. “It would be a tremendous amount of drainfield.”
He explained that mass drainfields are usually designed with sets of 10 100-foot trenches. By the state regulations, each trench must be separated from the next by six to eight feet, and each set of trenches must be separated by a distance of 20 feet. When the natural contours and low areas of the site are considered, and the design is drawn to avoid any natural drainage areas on the land, “it would be spread out across a considerable amount of land,” Mr. Shepherd said.
