Some tips for saving energy and reducing electric bills include:

• Lowering the thermostat, to save three percent on heating use for each degree the setting is reduced. Keep in mind the dangers of hypothermia, especially if a family member is older than 60, younger than two or physically disabled. Cool temperatures from 60 to 65 degrees can cause the body temperature to drop.

• Cleaning and replacing furnace or heat pump filters, to help the unit operate as efficiently and cheaply as possible.

• Keeping doors closed and covering windows.

• Taking advantage of the sun’s warmth by opening draperies and blinds of south-facing windows, but closing them at dark or on cold, gray days.

• Considering the installation of an add-on heat pump, which is the most energy-efficient heating system, with the added benefit of air conditioning in the summer.
