To the editor:
I searched last week’s Rappahannock News looking for a rebuttal from William Wickens, Town Councilman and Chairman of the Town Planning Commission, to your editorial of last week, or a fuller explanation from him of his visit to Ray Gooch, also a member of the Town Council.
Mr. Gooch alleged at the last Town Council meeting that Mr. Wickens attempted to coerce him into resigning from The Council, using his knowledge of supposed tax evasion by Mr. Gooch. I found no such response from Mr. Wickens, and I am not content to let the matter rest as it stands.
I have many questions, not the least of which is how Mr. Wickens was made privy to priviledged and confidential tax records. However, my biggest question is simple, and I will be direct. Mr. Wickens, did you or did you not say to Mr. Gooch that if he resigned quietly, you thought the story of his alleged tax violation could be kept quiet?
That does not sound like a “friendly” visit, and it’s hard for me to believe that Mr. Gooch could have “misunderstood” your intention if you did indeed suggest he resign from Town Council. If you did be
