Last call for voter registration

Saturday, Oct. 6 is the last day for residents to register to be eligible to vote in the general election on Nov. 6. Registrar Nancy Leake's office will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday for last-minute registrants. The registrar's regular hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Registrar's Office will also be open on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for absentee *" voters to cast ballots. Social Security hours cut

The Social Security office in Culpeper, which serves Rappahannock County, announced this week that it will no longer be open on Fridays. Until further notice, the new office hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Business may still be transacted by telephone during those hours at the toll-free number, (800) 234-5772. IRS tax numbers change

The telephone numbers used by Virginia residents to contact the Internal Revenue Service for assistance were changed on Oct. 1. The new numbers, also toll-free, are: for tax questions or assistance, (800) TAX-1040; to order tax forms or publications, (800) TAX-FORM; to reach tele-tax and automated refund information, (800) TAX-4477; and to access a TTY/TDD, (800) TAX-4059, the numbers may be called from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Taxpayers calling the old numbers will receive electronic intercept messages listing the^new numbers. IRS District Director Jack Petrie said the changeover is part of the IRS's consolidation and upgrage of its communication network.
