Mr. Slaughter said, in a statement released on Monday, that he voted in favor of the continuing resolution which kept the government from shutting down at midnight, Oct. 1 because of his concern for those federal employees.
“More than one million Federal workers were unfairly held in suspense during budget negotiations, and now, they are spared from forced furloughs. I voted for this continuing resolution because I did not support undue burdens being placed on Federal employees.”
But, Mr. Slaughter added, “Generally, I am opposed to continuing resolutions because they are used to abuse a weak budget process that must be reformed. Mostly, continuing resolutions are proof of Congress’s failure to do its number one job, pass a budget.”
Rep. Slaughter met with President Bush on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the budget package. “At this meeting,” the Congressman said, “I plan to present my concerns, and the President will, I am sure, outline his. I believe it is appropriate to withhold final judgement on the proposed agreement until the President and I have had the opportunity to present our arguments and concerns to each other.”
At press time Wednesday morning, Congressman Slaughter’s office had not yet released a Statement about his meeting with President Bush. /
