There were newcomers to Chester Gap, like Paul Covington and his partner Charlie Hitt, while others are faithful supporters of the department and tournament like James Shipe and Timmy Williams, the mastermind behind the games.
Each in their own way supports the local fire department.
Volunteer fire departments around the state annually fight high maintenance bills, rising costs in supplies and increasing costs of firefighters’ gear, as well as the time spent fighting fires or saving the life of anyone who calls in distress.
Fund raising becomes an major part of the department’s maintenance. Besides a carnival, local doorto-door fund drives and other sales, the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Company holds its annual horseshoe tournament.
Teams pay $15 to enter. The trophies cost nearly $100. But, a small profit can be gained.
