Mrs. Heard to the Scouts, “every serviceperson should know that their country is behind them in their efforts. World peace is vital for the future existence of us all, and as Americans we share the responsibility to see that our children can continue to grow up in a free world.”
Operation Something From Home is a nationwide effort, and the Heard’s involvement has expahded from storing donated supplies in their home to a large warehouse. The effort has received permission to ship 77 pounds of supplies on each flight from the United States to Saudi Arabia.
The list of permissible items is long and varied, including paperback books, blank audio cassettes, razors (in short supply), and some types of non-perishable foods. Residents interested in donating specific items should contact Mrs. Simmons C6753064) or Mrs. Brown (675-3624) to make sure those items may be shipped
In addition to the collection boxes for individual donations, the Girl Scouts will also be soliciting county merchants for donations in the coming weeks, the leaders said.
For the Girl Scouts, the benefit is two-fold. They will earn community service merit badges for their participation in the project. And, they also gain the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed to the happiness of soldiers on duty far from home.
