Rappahannock County’s Girl Scouts are supporting our servicemen and women in the Persian Gulf through a community project organized by Troop 547.
The troop has joined with “Operation Something From Home,” headquartered in Manassas, and plans to begin collecting items to be sent to the troops in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the Middle East.
According to adult leader Ann Simmons, the project started when she saw a news item about Jean Heard of Manassas, who is organizing the effort in this area. She approached Girl Scout leader Sarah Brown with the suggestion that the Scouts become involved, and it took off from there.
On Monday, the Scouts were busy making posters to publicize the effort. Boxes will be placed in the high school and elementary school, as well as at Washington Baptist Church and Mountain Starter and Alternator, Mrs. Simmons’ business on the Fodderstack Road.
The items donated will be collected each week and delivered by Mrs. Simmons to the Heard’s warehouse in Manassas.From there, the donations will be shipped to the military units serving in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield.
