To the editor:
In Rappahannock County the fall season means cool breezes and easy conversation; inside the Beltway, it means hot air and talk of “sequestration.”
Once again, Congress has failed to deal responsibly with the Federal budget. The few Congressmen who have been willing to take the deficit seriously have been drowned out by the tax-and-spend advocates. Federal workers have been repeatedly threatened with layoffs. In the end, the taxpayers will pay the price of congressional profligacy.
French Slaughter is one of the few congressmen willing to do something about the government’s taxand-spend habit. He believes that cutting spending should be the first choice of the Congress in confronting the Federal deficit.
He supports amending the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced budget, and he supports giving the President the veto over budget line items. He continues to oppose new taxes, recognizing that new taxes inevitably lead to new spending.
Again and again, Mr. Slaughter has used his vote in Congress to protect the interests of the taxpayers. On Nov. 6, let’s use our votes to keep him in Congress.
