While Saturday’s teams were all male, children of all ages roamed the grounds while mothers and grandmothers cheered their favorites.

But, it wasn’t fun for everyone, though.

“First one to lose has to cook hamburgers,” the chief said with a laugh, adding others usually line-up behind the team of their choice so when the final game is played, a cheering crowd has been established.

“We started this tournament with just nine teams,” he said, “and today we have 22. That shows it’s still popular.”

The fire chief said the team member range in age from teenage to much older.

“I guess James Shipe or Bradly Pullen are our oldest players,” the chief said, indicating the man in the hole, intently sighting his shoe with the peg, before the toss.

The peg greets the shoe with its usual ping; the toss is good, the point won.
