grow Upwards, more vigorously than before.

“A tree wants to grow up!” he says. “If you try to force it in any other direction, you'll always have to come back and cut more upright growth. It will continue to grow upwards until the day it dies.”

The result is that a tree can become “addicted” to frequent pruning - “It needs to be headed back every year to keep its height down,” Mr. Wood explains. “Thinning out, not heading back, is the best way to control height growth. It is possible to prune so that a tree’s height growth slows down of its own accord. It is even possible to prune so that height growth stops altogether.” And as height growth diminishes, he adds, the need for more pruning in future years also diminishes.

Mr. Wood, formerly Rappahannock’s county forester, has been a resident of the county since 1976. He is owner of “Tree Works,” a private business based in Washington devoted to tree care and forest management.

This workshop will be an introduction to pruning all kinds of trees. It will focus initially on apple trees, as a means of familiarizing participants with procedures and concepts related to pruning; then other tree species will be compared with apples.

Topics will include: objectives of pruning; tools and techniques; how to prune safely; heading, thinning and other pruning cuts; how a tree responds to pruning; summer and dormant pruning; and other tree care practices, such as fertilization and tree protection.

Everyone will have the opportunity to prune apple trees.

There is a fee of $20 for the workshop ($26 after March 26).

Those who register early will receive materials for advance reading.
