Brown said Dugan had the best route of the competitors. “I said the worse thing you can do is to run in your own backyard because you don’t look at it as objectively,” he added. Dugan must have taken his words to heart. “She took a separate way and saved 30 seconds,” said Brown.
All riders, whatever route they chose, had to cross the Thorton River twice in their trek around the beacons. “It (the course) was set up with several options in mind,” Brown said.
According to Brown, Dugan carefully rated her horse, saving his energy for a run at the finish.
“She started slow, and he’s a hard horse to keep together—he drifts. But she was into him today. I was surprised how much faster she was than Marlboro Prince,” said Brown.
