The conference provides students with an opportunity to act the role of members of Congress and key players in the Executive Branch. Students are given a selected set of issues and crises to research and then they spend four days in Boston immersed in the substantive realities and intricacies of our political system.
The Wakefield students attending the conference and their assignments were as follows. Locke Bell of Fauquier County was assigned the role of a liberal lobbysist on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Lee Daugherty of Clarke County was a member of the National Security Council. Justin Harrell of Haymarket was a Democrat from Arkansas serving on the Commerce, Science, Transportation and Energy, and Natural Resources Committees. Katie Holland of Winchester, a Republican from Texas, sat on the House Ethics Committee. Laura Larimer of Front Royal, a Republican from South Dakota, served on the Senate Foreign Affairs and Environment and Public Works Committees. Kathleen O’Neill, also of Front Royal, and also a Republican from South Dakota, was assigned to the Armed Services and Environment and Public Works Committees. John Viega of Winchester portrayed a Democrat from Iowa on the Senate Foreign Affairs and Labor and Human Resources Committees.
