if we are not using the theater,” Mr. Tompkins said of RAAC’s feeling concerning leaving the theatre, altogether. “But, we have held several things in the community with a positive response,” he explained, referring to the recently held events at Wakefield School, Washington Baptist Church and at the home of Sid Gottlieb.
“Now, we are looking at changes like these,” he said. A change of this sort correlates to the summary filed by the Futures Committee stating, “...RAAC needs to develop more intimate and cooperative relationships with other arts and community organizations in the area.”
It also calls for a community calendar maintained and produced by RAAC members.
“This is one thing that is a direct result of the committee,” Mr. Tompkins said, adding at present, Mr. Got' tlieb and Page Smith are compling a community calendar, a monthly log of events by various organizations in the communuity, printed by the RAAC office and distributed throughout spots in the community.
“We want those with imput or request to contact the office so the calendar can be complete,” Mr. Tompkins said, adding deadlines and details for the calendar and its usage can be obtained by contacting the RAAC office between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Wednesday and on Friday, at 675-3193 or by stopping by the office located at the end of Gay Street in Washington.
“We will send copies of the calendar to groups who participate and from that point more copies can be made,” he said of the calendar’s circulation.
Cost is the determining factor for calendar distribution. As with any non-profit organization, cost is the determining factor in many aspects of production.
“RAAC is attempting to do too much,” Mr. Tompkins said. This statement reflects those made by the Futures Committee, while stating “...RAAC should continue to provide a modest level of support in the arts to the schools in the county,” The summary also recomends fewer movies, fewer monthly programs, more volunteer assistance and new fund-raising techniques. Opening the review, the committee stated “... RAAC activity needs to be balanced against the available human and financial resources of RAAC.”
